A barber without customers, Shere Ali looks upon his empty workplace as crowds outside prepare for Muharram processions. I stumble upon this saloon walking around intestinal back-lanes off Muhammed Ali road. It is very very old, with delicately patterned wallpaper, antique clock and wrought iron staircase leading to the next floor where Ali lives. On the walls are old framed paintings of Mecca.

In a few hours Shere Ali will close shop and join the crowds outside.
