Our first contact involved some half-hearted bargaining, and we were deep into conversation a couple of lanes later. Raja had spent the past three decades being a taxi driver, ferrying the good and the bad through streets, to meetings, shops and whorehouses, bars and dancing girls and boys and drug traffickers. And he had done business with the gangs and got rich, and provided for his family, and fought off crowds with soda bottles and bicycle chains and threatened policemen with connections.
