"How can the State adopt a measure to deprive a life, any life, a life which has been shaped and influenced by the State?" You question the authority of the State to play God. But isn't sentencing a man to life imprisonment doing just that? What you're doing is quantifyiing human suffering. You say it's OK to keep a man in a cell for the rest of his life, but you've decided that the next step is a step too far, because you find it, somehow, unpallatable. We play God all the time. Our justice system decides, and it delivers. Judgement is everywhere.
