Further on, gibbons that are being pursued to extinction stared at us near the Bang Pae Waterfall. More ape than monkey, they can behave much like humans, and we watched each other fascinated, at the rehabilitation centre. Their long tapering limbs ended in black hands and feet, wrinkled and small like an old lady’s. The most enchanting of them was five month-old Nat, clinging to his mother and looking at us with beady eyes. As we looked elsewhere, he clambered to the edge of his enclosure and poked a black finger at us, tapping on a forehead and bridging an evolutionary gap.
