And so, while most stayed away from the kingdom in fear of the aftermath of the tsunami – devastation and disease – I journeyed to the country and discovered there was none. I stayed on the southern Andaman coast for almost a week, exploring the island of Phuket and journeying to Krabi by that ubiquitous Thai speciality, the tuk-tuk. The tuk is a very special thing, and in many ways a metaphor for things here. The Thais have taken the common rickshaw and made it their own, adding charm and common sense and making it look so natural you couldn’t imagine it any other way. In the end you have a fusion of cultures and an end product that is distinctively Thai.
